This is a new and a very creative way of making a collage out of a single photo. Yes you heard us right – a single photo. You must have noticed professional designers do this for magazines, blogs or advertisements.
Let us take an example to understand this concept better. A woman’s portrait with a garden in the background can be converted into such a collage. It will look like 4-5 frames (bordered frames) have combined to form the photo. But each frame can have different colour tones, titled at different angles (not too steep so as to distort the face) and different borders.
The effect will be like 4-5 frames are coming together from all directions to make one single photo. The frames generally overlap and crop the photo in multiple ways, yet gives an illusion of a complete photo. You can also give it a photo-ish look by turning each frame’s border into little Polaroids.
It is a fantastic new concept which takes a little practice and finness. Very few software have the proper tools to make such a collage. Here is a general outline of how to make such a collage using Adobe Photoshop :
1. Drag the photo into workspace and make a raw copy layer to be used as the basic background. You can set opacity to 40% to give it a faded look.
2. Go to the content’s window and select the type of frame you want to use. You can use Polaroid style frames or vintage ones for a retro look.
3. Use the bounding box to rotate and resize the frame. Hit Enter when done. Click inside the frame and navigate to the JPEG copy file (save one before you start), then click Place. Resize and position the image, using the faded layer as a guide.
4. Continue to add more such frames in the same way, till you have the complete picture ready as a collage.
