Picasa scans your computer hard drive to find photos and then displays those photos to you. It does not actually store your photos and videos in the program. If the same photo is saved in multiple folders, then you will see duplicates in Picasa. If you use 'Import' button to get photos into Picasa from your hard drive, then you will end up with two copies on your hard drive and on display. Picasa allows you to exclude duplicate photos while importing. To exclude duplicate photos, select 'Exclude Duplicates' option located at the import page. It will detect duplicate photos by comparing file sizes, names and much more. If a photo displays a res x in the import tray, that means it is already included in Picasa. It also allows you to set this as a default preference. To set it by default, open 'Picasa' and click 'Tools' and then 'Options' button. Select 'General' tab and select 'Automatically detect duplicate files while importing' option and then click 'Ok' button.
