How to Use Flickr for Creating Backup of Your Photos?

Last Updated :

Modern digitization in the field of photography has resulted in lesser number of people printing their photos. Rather, nowadays people are more interested in saving their photos on their PCs or laptops for future use. The general trend today is to save the images on some cloud storage facility available.

There are a variety of options available on the net. One of these is Flickr. Flickr enables its users to host their images and pictures on the net thereby preventing any accidental losses due to any problems in the PCs or laptops. Flickr is essentially an image as well as image hosting site that allows the user to store their photos online. It provides an online storage capacity of 1 TB which is among the highest available in the market. Even if you are not professional photographer this much storage capacity in the cloud is more than sufficient for your entire lifetime.

How to use it?

Flickr is a effectively a better photo storage service as compared to other facilities that are available online. It has browser based uploader that is not quite suitable for uploading photos in bulk. However, there are a number of software tools available to do that. For uploading an image with the help of Flickr just follow the steps give below:
  • Download and install Flickr app.
  • Create an account on Flickr by providing the necessary details and then login to your account.
  • You will see a camera icon in the bottom of your screen. Tap it.
  • A dialogue box will pop up from where you can browse to the folders where your images are kept.
  • Upload the desired image or images.
  • Alternatively, you can drag the images that you want to upload and drop them in the Flickr folder on your PC.
  • Lastly add a group name and your batch of images will be uploaded.

Flickr also provides a scheduler that goes by the name of Flickr Scheduler. This tool enables the users to schedule the uploading of their images and videos. However, if you are wishing to upload as many as 100 and 1000 photos then it may get stuck in between. This issue can be solved by using a third party desktop application which enables you to upload images in bulk. One such application is Bulkr.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
