How to Backup Photos from iPhone to iPad using Photo Stream?

Last Updated :

Photo stream is an extremely useful feature that allows you to sync photos across your iOS devices. When you have more than one iOS devices, Photo Stream helps you to transfer photos between devices, quickly. By default, photo streams are enabled when you setup your iPhone. That means every photo you click will be uploaded to your stream when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Following is the step by step process to backup photos from iPhone to iPad using Photos Stream:

A. Backup New Photos from iPhone to iPad
  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. The Photo Stream is a feature that uploads your newly-taken photos to iCloud so that they can be accessed from all of your connected iOS and OS X devices. Photos are uploaded once the iPhone is connected to a wireless network.
    - This requires iOS 5.1 or later for both the iPhone and the iPad.
  2. Select "iCloud" from the menu. Photo Stream uses your iCloud account to upload the photos, but they don't count against your iCloud storage limit.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID if you aren't already. Photo Stream requires iCloud, which is accessed through your Apple ID. Click here for instructions on creating an Apple ID if you don't have one.
  4. Tap the "Photos" option. This will load the settings menu for your iCloud photos.
  5. Toggle "Upload to My Photo Stream" ON. This will send newly-taken pictures to your Photo Stream when your iPhone is connected to a wireless network.
    - This will only add pictures you take after enabling the feature to your Photo Stream. If you need to share existing photos, see one of the following sections.
  6. Open the Photos app on your iPad. After the photos from your iPhone have uploaded to iCloud, they will be available on all of your connected devices.
    - Make sure that you are signed in with the same Apple ID on your iPad.
  7. View your Photo Stream photos. The process for accessing these photos depends on the version of iOS that your iPad uses:
    - iOS 8 - Tap "Albums" at the bottom of the screen and select "Recently Added".
    - iOS 7 and older - Tap "Photo Stream" at the bottom of the screen and select "My Photo Stream".
  8. Save the photo to your iPad. Photo Stream stores your photos for thirty days, after which they are erased from iCloud. If you want to keep a photo from the Photo Stream on your iPad, you'll need to save it to your iPad's storage.
    - Open the photo from the Photo Stream that you want to save.
    - Tap the "Share" button. This looks like a box with an arrow coming out of the top.
    - Select "Save Image" or "Save to Camera Roll".
B. Backup Old Photos from iPhone to iPad
  1. Enable photo sharing on both the iPhone and iPad. In order to share photos using Photo Stream, you'll need to enable photo sharing on both the iPhone and the iPad.
    - Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
    - Tap the "iCloud" option.
    - Select "Photos".
    - Toggle "iCloud Photo Sharing" ON.
    - Repeat the same process on your iPad.
  2. Open the Photos app on your iPhone. You can use Photo Stream to share specific pictures with your iPad. This is especially useful if you have more than one existing picture that you want to transfer to your iPad.
  3. Tap the "Shared" tab at the bottom of the screen. If this opens the Activity window, tap "< Sharing" to return to the main Sharing screen.
  4. Tap "+" to create a new Photo Stream. You will be prompted to create a name for the album. Hit "Next" when you're finished.
  5. Enter the people you want to share with. If you are only sharing the photos with yourself, leave the fields empty and tap "Create".
  6. Tap the new Photo Stream to open it. Your newly-created photo stream will appear in the list, but it won't have anything in it yet. Tap it to start adding pictures.
  7. Tap the "+" button to select a picture to add. You can select multiple pictures at once by tapping each one to add a checkmark to it. Once you are satisfied with your selection, tap Done.
  8. Enter a description (optional). You'll be prompted to enter a description for the shared photos after selecting them. You can leave this blank and tap "Post" if you don't need a description.
  9. Access the photos from your iPad. Once you've posted the pictures, they'll be uploaded to iCloud (as long as your iPhone is connected to a wireless network). You'll be able to access them from the iPad in just a few moments.
    - Open the Photos app on your iPad.
    - Tap the "Shared" tab at the bottom of the screen. If you don't see the Shared tab, you didn't enable iCloud Photo Sharing in your iPad's Settings menu.
    - Tap the Photo Stream that you just created. It may take a moment for all of the pictures in the Photo Stream to download.
  10. Save the photo to your iPad. Pictures shared through your Photo Stream will not actually be stored on the iPad, and will disappear if they are deleted on the iPhone.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
