How to Backup iPhone Photos Automatically without iTunes?

Last Updated :

If you fill up your iPhone's storage space with photos and want to keep them safe, then you have two options. Either you can transfer photos from iPhone to Mac or automatically backup photos to Dropbox cloud storage service to save space on your iPhone and keep them safe. Once you save your photos to computer or cloud storage service then you can delete photos from your iPhone. You can transfer photos to Mac by connecting the USB cable which came with your iPhone. You can also backup photos to Dropbox from your iPhone using 'Camera Upload' feature. A 'Camera Upload' feature allows you to automatically backup photos and videos from iPhone to your Dropbox account.

There are Two Ways to Backup iPhone Photos Automatically without iTunes:

A) Transfer Photos from iPhone to Mac:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac using the USB cable that came with your iPhone.
  2. Depending on your settings, "iPhoto" will open automatically. If it doesn't open automatically, open it from the Finder.
  3. You will see all your photos and videos from your iPhone.
  4. Click "Import Photos" button to import all photos Or Click "Import Selected" button to import one or more photos.
  5. Switch to the "Last Import" tab.
  6. Click "Edit" and select All and then click "Edit" button.
  7. Click "Copy" to copy all photos which you just imported from your iPhone.
  8. Go to "Finder".
  9. Click "Edit" and then click "Paste" option to paste the all imported videos into your Mac.
  10. This is how you can transfer photos from iPhone to Mac.

B) Automatically Backup iPhone Photos to a Cloud Service:

  1. Go to https://www.dropbox.com/ & sign in to your account. If you don't have an account, then create an account.
  2. Download "Dropbox App" on your iPhone from the Apple App store & launch it.
  3. Open "Dropbox" app on your iPhone.
  4. Tap "Setting" or "gear" icon located at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Select "Camera Upload" option.
  6. Turn ON "Camera Upload".
  7. Once "Camera Upload" is enabled, you will see 2 options i.e "Only Wi-Fi" & "Wi-Fi+Cell".
  8. Click "Only Wi-Fi" option & then click "Enable" button located at the top right corner.
  9. A pop-up window "Dropbox would like to Access your Photos" opens up, click "OK" button to automatically upload your photos.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

LOVE this program! Works better than ANY other program out there that I have found to upload thousands of pictures WITH SUB-FOLDERS to SmugMug! Thank you so much for what you do! :) #happycustomer

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
