When it come to clicking action photos in low lit environment, the most important thing is the mode you are shooting in. For example to take pictures in a poorly lit gym, the important thing you need is a Fast lens. Probably a F2.8 or even faster. If you often take action pictures in low lit areas or indoors, then a zoom lens with fixed apertures of f2.8 (35-70 or 80-200) can prove to be a good investment for you photos. You'll definitely would be able to take clear and sharp pictures.
Another important thing to consider is the High ISO. It is an essential element when shooting in less lit places. An ISO of 800 - 1600 should ideally be used to keep your shutter speed at least (1/125 seconds (for 35-70 zoom) or 1/200 second (for 80-200 zoom). Using fill flash at -1 to -2 stops can also help you click clear pictures.
There may come a time when none of these techniques and tricks work for you. In that case, set your camera to the fastest shutter speed, the largest aperture setting and use flash to get desired results. The only disadvantage here could be is a dark background. But, the subject will be well lit. At times 400 ISO with a dark background is better than 1600 ISO with a lighter background if is too grainy.
