What is the Golden-Hour of photography?

Last Updated :

The one thing that can make or break a picture is, the light. You might have a top notch camera and the most expensive gear in the world. You might be an ace photographer who has won a series of awards, but you know it for sure that without the right kind & quality of light you can't capture anything that is flattering or worth a praise. All you are left with is a flat, dull, underexposed picture which many won't even care to look at. This holds true for any kind of photography, be it food, adventure sports, kids, indoors or landscape photography. It is often difficult to illuminate your subject with an artificial light all the time. Once in a while is fine, but doing it every time is next to impossible. When you are shooting outdoors, it is very important to shoot it at the right time. Choosing the time of the day is critical in terms of the amount of light present there. The fest solution to this problem is the 'Golden-Hour' The 'Golden-Hour' in photography is defined as the first and last hour of sunlight in the day. i.e. the first hour of light after sunrise, and the last hour of light before sunset. However, the exact duration varies from season to season. This time of the day is known for producing great photographs. Sometimes, the 'Golden-Hour' is also referred as 'magic-hour' due to its magical & colorful lighting. During these times of the day the sun produces a soft and diffused light which is soothing to the human eyes. It is much more flattering and beautiful to capture as compared to the harsh & bright sunlight during the day. The light right after the sunrise is a little red and diffused and gets brighter as the sun rises with a yellow color. The light before the sunset is a little yellow in the beginning and tends to get darker as the sun sets. Right before the sunset it changes from yellow to a shade of red. This what the 'Golden-hour' of photography is. For many of the professional photographers, this is the best time for any kind of outdoor-photography.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
