How to photograph the process of food preparation?

Last Updated :

Want to make your own photo cook show? If the thrill of showing how to cook something fascinates you, then you must try your hand at clicking photos of food while you are at work in the kitchen.

Popular social media networks like Pinterest and food blogs often use this technique of visually complementing the recipe. On Pinterest, all it takes is photos to show how to cook a particular dish.

Here are some tips which will help you click amazing pictures which look every bit as delicious as your dish itself. These tips will come in specially handy if you are alone and don’t have anyone to click the pictures for you.

1. If you are one of those who want to capture the actual process of cooking and show the step-by-step slideshow before showing what the end result looks like, then you must ensure that there is ample of natural light in the kitchen. Open all the windows to let the sunlight in. Try to shoot during the day. If not, switch on all the lights inside the kitchen and shoot in night mode. But that might compromise on your dish’s colour.

2. If you alone in the kitchen, then the self-timer is going to come to your rescue. Find a good spot in the kitchen where you can place the camera. It should give a good view of you while cooking and the rest of the kitchen as well. You can also zoom in really close to show how you are dicing with a knife, using the Macro mode of your camera. For taking pictures of ingredients, you can simply shoot yourself.

3. DO NOT use the flash. It might make some food items look different in colour than what those really are. Hot spots and reflection from glass utensils will mess up your photo.

4. If you want to take pictures in which your hands are visible, say while mixing or chopping, then try this simple trick:  Hang your camera on your neck and set the self-timer to five seconds. This will give you enough time to leave it, and start working with your hands.

5. Plate up in the most artistic way! It would be a good investment to get some fine plates, bowls, platters and cutlery. Plate your masterpiece tastefully so that the final product not only looks yummy but classy too.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
