If underwater photography is your latest passion, then you must start looking for a good camera that will work underwater. Water-proof cameras are not exactly as common as normal cameras, so getting a little help on understanding what you need before investing in a camera is essential.
Water-proof cameras currently available in market have outstanding durability features, but are not so good as far as photo quality is concerned. You won’t get the same quality that you will get with an SLR camera. But that is nothing, when it gives you the freedom to click photos where not all cameras can venture.
Three popular cameras used by underwater photographers are are the Pentax WG-3 GPS, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 and Nikon Coolpix AW110. Here is a simple guide to help you decide what you need to look for in a camera.
1. Image quality is the first and foremost thing you should look for. Most good water-proof cameras have a resolution of 16megapixel. Check for a good optical zoom option as well, preferably 4x or more. It is especially useful in underwater photography since quite often you will need to zoom in on your subject.
2. Take into consideration the maximum depth at which the camera will work underwater. Normally for clicking photos in a pool or a shallow aquarium, you can make do with a camera which offers a working-depth of maximum 3 metres. But beyond that, you will need a good underwater camera which lets you dive in till 30 feet.
3. The best waterproof cameras are equipped with built-in video recorders. Look for video with audio components like microphones, so that you can record sound, as well. Additionally, we like cameras that are equipped with a built-in GPS to help you find your way.
4. Lighting is critical for capturing good images. There is an ongoing debate as to whether CMOS or CCD image sensors regulate light better. Since CCD sensors have been around longer, the technology they use is more advanced. CCD sensors tend to create a higher quality image that is not as grainy.
5. Be aware that most waterproof cameras do not float. You will need to take precautions when using them. Something as simple as keeping it strapped to your wrist will prevent it from sinking to the bottom of a lake.
