How to freeze the action?

Last Updated :

Sports, be it indoors or outdoors, are jam packed with action and movement. Some sports are extremely fast paced and some are slow paced. Action is what attracts photographers all over the world. Capturing a sharp, clear and crisp action picture is an art. Sometimes even the professional photographers can not capture an action picture in one go. It takes a lot of patience, hard work and a little knowledge to capture action photographs.

A good sports or action photographer is the one who is able to freeze the action in the middle of anything. Like a goal keeper in the air, a skier in the sky, a motorist in the air etc. The most important thing to consider is the shutter speed. If you master shutter speed, then there's nothing better than this. Every photo that you click, you will be able to properly freeze the motion of the athletes and will make a sharp image without any blur.

Following these simple steps you too can freeze the action like a pro:

Choose which mode you want to shoot in: If you want to have control over everything, you may shoot in manual mode. Or if you can control the shutter speed, then shoot in shutter-priority mode. all you have to set is the shutter speed and rest of the settings (ISO and aperture) are all set automatically.

Set your shutter speed to 1/250 second or faster: A faster shutter speed is what you need the most to capture a freezing action.

Frame up your shot before you are going to shoot it.

When the subject comes into frame, press halfway down on the shutter release to auto-focus.

Once your subject is focused, simply press the rest of the way down on the shutter release to take the photo.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
