3 Tips for Taking Better Low-Light Photos

Last Updated :

Struggling with low-light photo? Try these tips for better low-light photos.  Clicking pictures in low light condition is one of the most difficult things to achieve. There are many people like you and me who find it difficult to take pictures in low light settings. The best way to master this is to keep the knowledge of your camera settings and practice one function at a time. Following are a few simple ways to take better photographs in low light.

  1. Keep the camera steady - Camera shake ruins photos taken in low light, either use a remote control or a tripod until you learn to hold it in your hands for low light images.
  2. Control the light sensitivity (ISO) - It is represented by some numbers like 100, 200, 400....3200 etc. Lower ISO ensures fine pictures and high ISO will give you a grainy picture. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds. A 100 ISO is generally accepted as ‘normal’ and will give you lovely crisp shots.
  3. Control the shutter speed - The shutter speed is an important term and a setting on your camera that can make or break a picture.  The Shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time the sensor is exposed to light. The speed is measured in seconds and fractions of it. For example shown in seconds or fractions of a second: 1 s, 1/2 s, 1/4 s … 1/250 s, 1/ 500 s, etc.f you are holding the camera in your hand, you should keep the shutter speed at faster than 1/30 of a second, otherwise even a slight shake of your hand will make the images blurry.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
