Tips for Outdoor Portrait Photography on a Cloudy Day
Last Updated :
Shooting an outdoor portrait photograph on a cloudy day can be great but can have disadvantages too. Cloudy overcast skies means very bright sunlight is missing and the overall lighting is even. On the low side, you can end up with dull portraits if the light is insufficient. Here are some tips you can try out when shooting an outdoor portrait photograph on a cloudy day.
Flash
You can usually shoot on a cloudy day without a flash and capture the subject in ambient light. This generally creates natural-looking soft portraits as there is no harsh light around. However, if the clouds are very dark and the natural light seems insufficient, do use a flash so that you do not end up with dimly lit portraits.
Reflector
Reflectors can be used to bounce light into your subject’s face, thus highlighting it. Reflectors come in a range of shapes, sizes and colors. You can play around with them in outdoor portrait photography on cloudy days as the light around is soft and even. Flipside is you would need an assistant to hold the reflector!
Landscape
On cloudy days, the effect the landscape has on the portrait is immense. Depending on the theme you have in mind, you can choose from a variety like a barn, a stone wall, picket fence, the beach, a shaded hillside and so on. Make sure the distance and angle of your subject from the landscape is perfectly balanced. A slight blurring of the background too makes for stunning pictures on a cloudy day.
Direction
Even though the sun may not be directly visible due to the clouds, its effect is important. Find the direction of the sun and get your subject to face that direction (i.e. behind you). You will see the difference in the final portrait.
Camera settings
Cameras having fast lens with wide aperture values give you a shallow depth of field. These are ideal for portrait photography. When shooting in ambient light on a cloudy day, set your aperture to f8 and shutter speed of 1/200.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and
efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job
of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot
of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different
places.

LOVE this program! Works better than ANY other program out
there that I have found to upload thousands of pictures WITH SUB-FOLDERS to SmugMug! Thank you so
much for what you do! :) #happycustomer

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked -
all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the
process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was
a breeze. Thank you!

I started with the basic plan, went to premium and now on their platinum plan
and it's more than worth the price for me. PicBackMan has saved me many tedious hours of
effort moving many files between my various cloud and photo site services and my local
computers.

I am very satisfied and surprised at the same time with Pic
BackMan. The service is very good and useful. I used it to transfer my photos from
Dropbox to my Flickr accound. I highly recomment it.

PicBackMan was an answer to many a prayer. How can I get this MASSIVE
collection of photos onto a service that cripples uploading? PicBackMan. I uploaded
approximately 85,000 photos in less than a month. It would have taken me close to a year
to get all of those photos where they needed to go. Nothing short of brilliant.
