How to update Google Photos Backup (desktop uploader) to latest version?

Last Updated :

To make sure that your Google Uploader is loaded with all the new features, the application must be up-to-date and updated to the latest version.  Following is the step by step process to update Google Photos Backup "Desktop Uploader" to the latest version.

To update your Auto Backup to Google Photos Backup:
  1. Click on the Auto Backup Icon in the system tray in the lower right of the windows desktop and select "About...".
  2. If the version is earlier than build 248 after installing Picasa, click on Help in the auto backup Icon and then click the Google Photos
  3. In that page download the "Desktop Uploader" App.
  4. Run the downloaded installer to update G+ Auto Backup to replace it with Google Photos Backup.
  5. Make sure in Settings that Photo size is set to High Quality (free unlimited storage) unless you have purchased extra Google Drive storage (so you can upload original size photos).
  6. Google Photos Backup will rescan your computer for photos to upload and will say it is backing up all your photos, but it will actually only backup the photos that were not yet backed up.

PicBackMan does exactly what it's supposed to. It's quick and efficient. It runs unobtrusively in the background and has done an excellent job of uploading more than 300GB of photos to 2 different services. After having lost a lot of personal memories to a hard drive crash, it's nice to know that my photos are safe in 2 different places.

LOVE this program! Works better than ANY other program out there that I have found to upload thousands of pictures WITH SUB-FOLDERS to SmugMug! Thank you so much for what you do! :) #happycustomer

I pointed PicBackMan at a directory structure, and next time I looked - all the photos had uploaded! Pretty cool. I use SmugMug and while I really like it, the process of creating directories in is pretty laborious when you need to make 80+ at a time. This was a breeze. Thank you!
