How to Import Video from DSLR to iMovie?

The long form of DSLR is Digital Single-Lens Reflex camera. Importing videos from DSLR to iMovie is very easy. Just check whether your DSLR camera is compatible with iMovie or not. If not, then you may be able to import video into iPhoto. After imported video into iPhoto, the footage is in a video format on your computer and it appears that it is compatible with iMovie in your iMovie 'Event Library' and iMovie generates thumbnails of the video. Each type of camera has a different file structure and naming convention.

Here are the steps to Import Video from a Compatible DSLR to iMovie:

  1. Turn ON your DSLR and set it to import mode.
  2. Connect the camera to your computer.
  3. When you connect your camera to computer, it will automatically open the "iPhoto".
  4. If iPhoto opens, close it.
  5. Open "iMovie" and Select "File" > "Import" > "Movies".
  6. A pop-up window opens up. Click the name of your device located at the left side of the window.
  7. Click the appropriate folders to navigate to the videos located on your camera.
  8. Select the videos which you want to import.
  9. Choose the disk where you want to store the video from the "Save to" pop-up menu.
  10. Organize the imported video in your "Event Library".
    a) To add the imported video to an existing Event, select "Add to Existing Event", and then choose its name from the pop-up menu.
    b) To create a new Event, type a name for it in the "Create new Event" field. If you want to create a new Event for each day on which the video was recorded, select "Split days into new Events".
  11. Click "Import" button.
  12. All your videos will now be imported to iMovie.
