Subject in action - If your subject is constantly moving, your picture might lack sharpness. The freeze the action / movement you need to have a fast shutter speed. If the shutter sped of your camera is low your pictures will lack sharpness.
Camera shake - Another very common reason that for lack of sharpness in your picture is the camera shake. Even the professional photographers have to cautiously deal with this issue. They have to be super steady and still to avoid camera shake. That's the reason many photographers prefer using a tripod to avoid any kind of shake. A tripod helps you keep your camera still in one position for a longer time as compared to holding it manually.
Image Noise - Image noise is distortion in your image. In photography world, this distortion is referred as Noise. A noisy picture looks grainy and often blurred causing lack of clarity and sharpness.
