Both Apple Photos and Google Photos works with mobile and desktop applications to import photos and view your library. Apple Photos app allows you to migrate photos, videos and metadata from iPhoto without changing them. Your photos will migrate with the adjustments and filters you applied in iPhoto. Apple Photos app also work with iCloud Photo Library, so you can access your photos and videos on all your Mac computers. You can drag and drop photos or folders onto the Apple Photos window or its app. You can also "Control-click" the iPhoto library and choose "Expand Package Contents" to find the auto import folder.

Google Photos has a "Google Photos Backup" desktop application which allows you to automatic upload photos from your camera and storage cards, hard disk or external media. You can open Google Photos Backup app and click "Browse" button to select destination and check mark the folders in "Desktop Folders" to import them to Google Photos and then click "Add" button. You can also drag and drop photos or folders into web browser pointed at photos.google.com. Google Photos Backup preferences allows you to designate devices and folders for auto uploading. If you choose your iPhoto or Photos library, anything you import into then gets uploaded to Google Photos.
